TAURINE FOR DOGS: HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENT?

Taurine is an amino acid necessary for the proper development and functioning of a dog’s heart. Taurine deficiency can cause dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition in which the heart cannot adequately perform its function. It can be caused by genetic predisposition in breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, American Cocker Spaniels, English Setters, Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards, metabolic factors, and/or nutritional deficiency from protein-restricted diets.

HOW MUCH TAURINE TO SUPPLEMENT?

Based on studies in Taurine deficient dogs at the Universities of Minnesota and Georgia, researchers recommend a daily amount of 500mg of Taurine per 25lbs. of dog weight. The problem with popular heart supplements sold on Amazon, where I typically shop, is that Taurine amounts are way lower than that.

DR. OSCAR TAURINE FOR DOGS

Taurine is safe with no side effects and any excess amounts, not needed by the dog’s body, will be excreted as waste. Research also shows that higher taurine levels are linked to significantly lower rates of death from heart disease. The heart health of my dog is a really important matter to me, so I am not willing to take any risks with lower Taurine levels, regardless of the number of consumer reviews on Amazon. This is why I created Dr. Oscar Taurine for Dogs.

WHY TAURINE AND CARNITINE?

You’ll notice that in addition to 500mg of Taurine per chewable tablet, Dr. Oscar supplement provides 50mg of L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine transports long chain fatty acids to the heart, where they are used for energy and removes toxic metabolites out of it. It works synergistically with Taurine to support heart health.

HOW LONG TO SUPPLEMENT WITH TAURINE?

While different dogs may require different duration of Taurine supplementation, research suggests that it may take approximately 3 - 4 months for echocardiographic improvement to occur in dogs with DCM. Some dogs may need an ongoing supplementation. Consult your Vet to determine the exact needs of your dog.
